Artistic Radio and Podcast Project

The current outreach project seeks expanded possibilities of “bringing up a subject”. Based on the questions raised by the nGbK project groups and by expanding upon them with neighbouring communities, the radio and podcast formats which are broadcast and accessible on the website of the nGbK literally “air” the voices, questions and commentaries of both the project groups and the visitors. The aim is to fictively further developing the project themes, raise questions and make comments together with visitors and also persons who have never visited the nGbK yet.

Anna Bromley develops exhibitions, installations, performances, radio talks and essays that deal with breaks and lapses in modes of representative speech. Her most recent radio pieces were presented at, among others, documenta14, The Artists Residence Herzliya and the Fondazione Angelo Pistoletto. As a radio producer, she is rooted in the Berlin community radio reboot.fm.

Lüftung #1
For the project “Left Performance Histories”

10 - 18 February 2018
Workshop

The focus of this first edition of “Lüftung” is on the circulation of knowledge via mobile sound recordings, speaking techniques, notions of moderation, and basic techniques of audio editing. It is all about comparing sound textures of mobile recorders with those of smartphones, optimizing recording levels, and exploring one’s own voice and its modulations in various recording textures. And, of course, radio dramaturgies: What poses a challenge to our listening habits and what accommodates them? How do we want to speak, raise questions and bring our voices together? In order to air the exhibition “Left Performance Histories”, we will record the original sounds of the project’s performances and talks, interview artists and curators on the sidelines of the events, reflect on speaking live on the radio and its imperfections, and cut the material on location to then broadcast it live at the Berlin radio station reboot.fm on the evening of 18 February.

The radio broadcast (59 min.) - Public Listening in the Presence of the Radio-Producers

nGbK event space
Conceived, recorded and montaged by a group of radio-affine nGbK-visitors, the broadcast explores the ambiguous notion, and theme of the nGbK-exhibition “Left Performance Histories”.
It compiles artifacts and archival material from performances in Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Rumania and the GDR between 1970 and 1989. Encountering its visual material and accompanying conference, the broadcast interweaves and montages the auditory side and texts of the exhibition with the questions and commentaries of the group. How can our perspectives relate to the articulations of left critique in this setting? What has been left for us to perceive? In what way did these performances come to an end, as they get recovered in a process of “archival archeology” which might be a montage in itself?

Public Listening in the Presence of the Radio-Producers
By and with Jasmina Al-Qaisi, Petra Beck, Anna Bromley, Basma Elmahdy, Christine Eßling, Yayla Höpfl, Lena Knäpper, Lena Schubert, Cindy Wegner, and Seoyoung Won
The radio broadcast Lüftung#1 responds to the research conducted by the project group “Left Performance Histories”, whose publication will come out this summer. The audio piece is a collage of documentary recordings from the conference accompanying the project, field recordings from the exhibition, as well as poetic and scenic feeds and pop music from the geographical and historical contexts of the exhibits.

Lüftung #2
For the project: LUCKY

30 June — 15 July 2018
Workshop

In this second edition of “Lüftung“, as before, everything revolves around sharing knowledge about mobile audio recording, speaking techniques and moderation concepts. This time, however, emphasis will be focused on the montage and dramaturgy of sound with “unfortunate“ audio textures from mobile recorders and smart phones. What do “noisy“ recordings and speaking errors let us hear? How can we experiment in the recording studio when the script doesn‘t exist yet?
To air the exhibition “Lucky“, we record original soundtracks of the exhibition construction and the performances at its opening, interview the creators and artists before the opening, and give thought to “lucky recordings“ and “unlucky failures“. After a “radical listening session“, we assemble the montage and shorten the material. The aim is to air it as an hour-long podcast on the evening of July 15th from the Berlin radio station reboot.fm and listen to it live at the nGbK.

Lüftung #3
Accompanying the project: TOUCH

13 October – 14 November 2018
Workshop
(10 sessions)
In this, the third iteration of “Lüftung,” everything revolves around flash stories: 3-minute mini-radio plays. We use a specific recording technique—microphones inserted into the outer ear—to generate so-called real-head stereophony, an uncanny immersive soundspace that we directly integrate into the scenography of our exhibition. To process and edit sound we use the open source software Audacity, splicing collected effects and brief interviews with voice and noise of our own making. What do our flash stories trigger? We’ll be testing the answers to that in three public listen-in sessions, in the exhibition setting, from 12 to 14 November.

Wednesday, 14 November 2018, 18h – 20h
Public Listening

With ultra-short radio plays, the third edition of Lüftung (Airing) will stroke, tickle, and scratch the auricles – with and by Kim Bode, Manfred Bojaschewski, Chiara Dazi, Viola Götz, Eunah Hong, Constanze Kaul, Kallia Kefala, Gabriela Monroy, Can Oral, Laura Raveling, Kerstin Weßlau. To be listened in the nGbK-exhibition “Touch”.
